Sel-Plus is an All Organic Trace Mineral,
Vitamin and Amino Acid Supplement
Designed for Maximum Effectiveness.
WHAT IS IN SEL-PLUS ?
Sel-Plus is an all organic trace mineral, vitamin and amino-acid supplement designed for maximum effectiveness. It does not contain any drugs or stimulants and no withholding time is required prior t competition.
DOES IT SUPPLY ALL THE VITAMINS AND MINERALS MY HORSE NEEDS ?
Sel-Plus is designed for performance horses, which have extra requirements for specific micronutrients. The formula must be fed daily and all ingredients have been carefully researched and field-tested to work together, while avoiding interference with the stability or digestibility of each other. For this reason, we do not recommend mixing Sel-Plus in the same feed as supplements of Vitamin C, Copper, Zinc or Sulphur, as they may disrupt its bioavailability.
WHY NOT USE A "MULTI" SUPPLEMENT WITH ALL THE VITAMINS AND MINERALS ?
Sel-Plus does not contain every vitamin and mineral required by the horse. Horses obtain many vitamin and mineral nutrients from good quality hay, grain and pasture. It is known that complex interactions can occur between minerals and vitamins and often the presence of one may block the absorption of another. Supplements containing all the vitamins and minerals are known as “multi supplements” and, although they may prevent deficiency symptoms, may not address the optimum needs of performance horses. Often such supplements contain insufficient quantities of key ingredients to be effective. All the components of Sel-Plus have been carefully chosen and balanced to promote synergism, and to be of most benefit to the equine athlete.
MUST I FEED SEL-PLUS DAILY ?
Sel-Plus is designed to be fed daily because its trace mineral components are used in the daily production of Red Blood Cells, and for many other vital functions. If the mineral levels fluctuate those cells made during periods without supplementation may be deficient in the trace mineral containing enzymes required for optimum performance. Sel-Plus should be fed either in the horse’s daily feed, slightly dampened, or sprinkled over a slice of dampened hay. Do not mix it with other supplements as many other supplements contain inorganic minerals, which can decrease the effectiveness of Sel-Plus. Sel-Plus is very palatable and is naturally flavoured with a spray dried apple concentrate flavour.
WHAT ARE AMINO ACIDS AND WHY DOES THE HORSE NEED THEM ?
Sel-Plus contains a high level of soy protein derived amino acids. These form the building blocks of every protein in the horse’s body, from muscle and ligament, to immune system and red blood cells. Before a horse can properly utilise inorganic minerals in its diet, they must be combined with amino acids in the intestine to form organic complexes. This process requires Vitamin D and enzymes to be present. All the trace minerals in Sel-Plus are organic amino acid complexes which are highly available to the horse. Chelated minerals are less likely to be ionised by the stomach acid to form indigestible salts and do not require processing in the small intestine prior to uptake. Organic chelated minerals are particularly good for horses under stress from hard work, age or pregnancy as the body very easily takes them up.
WHAT ARE TRACE MINERALS?
Trace minerals are elements in the soil required in tiny amounts for health. However, the minute amount needed in no way reflects the severity of symptoms trace mineral deficiencies can cause. Sel-Plus contains several trace minerals of which Selenium is one. Selenium has emerged as one important and powerful element in the prevention and treatment of tying-up syndrome. Many areas of the world are deficient in soil selenium. It is a natural anti-oxidant and helps the athletic horse rid his body of performance limiting waste products known as free radicals”.
CAN TRACE MINERALS BE HARMFUL ?
Sel-Plus contains only organically chelated trace minerals. In this chemical form they are both very safe to feed having a much higher LD 50 than the inorganic form, and are more absorbable. The horse has the ability to absorb up to 90% of organic trace minerals compared with the 20% commonly reported for the inorganic form. This reflects organic, chelated trace minerals superior bioavailability. All trace minerals in excessive doses can be toxic, but a horse would have to consume one 500 gram tin of Sel-Plus every day for months to reach unsafe levels! Sel-Plus is very safe to feed to all ages and types of horses.
IS SEL-PLUS IS COST EFFECTIVE?
If you carefully read feeding directions and contents of several supplements, you will see that Sel-Plus is very cost effective. This is especially true when you realise that the trace minerals are chelated in contrast to many supplements inferior grade inorganic elements. Fed with a good pasture, hay and grain diet and access to salt, Sel-Plus is the only feed supplement most performance horses need.
